Waterproofing project checklist
Use this checklist to prepare for a waterproofing project in Adelaide. It covers what to ask, what to check and what to expect from a licensed contractor.
Before you request a quote
- Note where the water or damp appears and when it happens (after rain, during showers, etc.)
- Take clear photos of stains, mould, bubbling paint or cracked grout
- Check whether the issue is inside a wet area, balcony, basement or roof deck
- Decide if you need urgent repair or are planning a renovation
What to ask the contractor
- Are you a licensed building work contractor in South Australia?
- Does the quote include surface preparation, priming and membrane (waterproofing sheet or liquid layer) application?
- What membrane system will be used and does it meet AS 3740 / AS/NZS 4858 (Australian waterproofing standards)?
- How many coats are included and what is the curing time?
- What warranty do you provide in writing?
Before work begins
- Read the written quote and scope carefully
- Confirm start date, access arrangements and protection of finishes
- Agree on payment terms and progress stages
- Ask how tiles, fixtures and fittings will be reinstated
After the job
- Keep a copy of the invoice, warranty and any compliance documentation
- Avoid using the area until the membrane has fully cured
- Inspect the finished work before making final payment
- Follow any maintenance advice for movement joints and drains
Waterproofing Adelaide checklist method
This checklist is a planning aid, not a compliance certificate. It helps homeowners prepare for a waterproofing project and compare quotes. It does not replace a licensed contractor's assessment, formal scope or building inspection.
How the checklist is built
Questions are grouped into four project phases: before you request a quote, during the quote meeting, before work begins and after the job.
Assumptions and limits
The checklist assumes residential waterproofing in Adelaide under the National Construction Code and AS 3740. Commercial, heritage and below-ground projects may need extra checks.
After work is complete
Keep invoices, warranty documents and compliance records for future reference.
